Unsettled Start to May

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 07:02:01 GMT

Spring in New England… if you know, you know. We’ve spent the last 12 days below average in Boston, our last above average day was April 18th! We broke that trend today, but only for a day as we head back in the other direction for the rest of this week.It was nice to see the sun back today after a very gray and wet weekend. Saturday wasn’t too bad with the rain showers holding off until Saturday evening. But starting Saturday evening until the rain ended this morning, we had some pretty impressive totals across the area — some towns approaching 4″ of rain! There were localized downpours especially overnight last night which is why some of these totals varied from one side of town to the other. Take Beverly for example, the airport reported 3.03″ of rain with another report of 3.88″. Either way, it was a soaker for everyone across New England.Despite the last two days being quite a soaker across New England, the month of April actually broug...

Michael Phillips | Chicago TribuneDoing anything special for Star Wars Day, other than digging out the old, busted lightsaber in your basement? For old times’ sake?Carmelo Esterrich, Columbia College professor of humanities and cultural studies, knows what he’s doing that day, May 4. FDIC recommends raising insured deposit limit for businesses

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 07:02:01 GMT

By SHARON L. LYNCH (Associated Press)NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. businesses might be able to secure bank deposit insurance for accounts holding more than $250,000 if Congress agrees with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s new proposal to ease the industry turmoil that has sparked three bank failures in the past two months. The FDIC recommended the change Monday, rethinking the decades-old limit and seeking more flexibility to cover higher deposits on a “targeted” basis. Raising the insurance limit for business accounts that pay for company operations such as payroll would shore up accounts that pose the most risk to financial stability, the FDIC said. The proposed change appears to openly acknowledge that the FDIC is looking for ways to calm both depositors and markets as the agency contends with the third bank run this year. First Republic Bank became the second largest failure in history Monday when regulators seized it and JP Morgan Chase stepped up as a buyer....

Marcos’ visit to Washington comes after the U.S. and the Philippines last week completed their largest war drills ever and as the two countries’ air forces on Monday will hold their first joint fighter jet training in the Philippines since 1990. The Philippines this year agreed to give the U.S. access to four more bases on the islands as the U.S. looks to deter China’s increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan and in the disputed South China Sea.Meanwhile, China has angered the Philippines by repeatedly harassing its navy and coast guard patrols and chasing away fishermen in waters that are close to Philippine shores but that Beij...
