In ‘Bidenomics,’ Congress delivered a once-in-generation investment — with political promise, peril

WASHINGTON (AP) — There are so many dots on the maps they blur into blobs — each one reflecting trillions of public and private dollars flowing in the U.S. this past year to build thousands of roads, bridges and manufacturing projects in communities large and small, in states red and blue. They include an electric vehicle “battery belt” of manufacturing stretching from Michigan to Georgia, semiconductor fabrication plants in Arizona, Texas, Ohio and New York and broadband coming to Appalachia.Taken together, they represent President Joe Biden’s ambitious attempt to use the levers of government to chart a new era of domestic manufacturing, modernizing the U.S. to compete in the 21st century. Packaged as “Bidenomics” by the White House, the effort is the product of three major bills approved in the last Congress that are also the president’s hoped-for roadmap for reelection. Republicans have balked at what they said was unwarranted federal spending. The debate between those...

Spain beats Sweden 2-1 with last-minute goal and advances to its first Women’s World Cup final

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Spain will play for its first Women’s World Cup championship after Olga Carmona’s goal in the 89th minute lifted La Roja to a 2-1 victory over Sweden in the Tuesday semifinal. Spain, which overcame last year’s near mutiny by its players against coach Jorge Vilda, will play the winner of tournament co-host Australia and England on Sunday in the final in Sydney. The controversy surrounding Spain dates to last September, when 15 players signed a letter complaining about Vilda and the conditions for the the national team. Three of those players are on this World Cup team, and Vilda a day before the game against Sweden praised the Spanish federation for its support. Now, La Roja has a chance to become a first-time World Cup champion. “This is a historic day,” said Vilda. “We’re in the final, that’s what we wanted.” He again thanked the federation and its leadership for the support that has Spain one win away from the World Cup.“The end resul...

DENVER (KDVR) -- After spending almost 24 hours lost in the Denver International Airport, Breezy, a year-old Bengal cat, was found hiding in the Southwest ramp area.Breezy and her owner Ginger Thompson flew to Denver for a cat competition. While boarding their flight on the way back to Washington, a mishap with the cat carrier caused Breezy to fall between the airplane door and jet bridge and onto the tarmac. Did you know Denver is one of the freshest non-coastal places you can get fish? Since Sunday, Breezy was on the run in DIA. Thompson stayed an extra day to search for Breezy, but booked a flight home Monday night after little luck, according to her Facebook. "It’s been a little over 24 hours since I lost Breezy. I’m going out of my mind worrying. Trying to be patient but laying here in the hotel waiting is killing me and I’m losing any hope as each hour passes," Thompson said on her Facebook. After a desperate search for the furbaby, Breezy was found on Monday by Southwest...

Can you get a DUI for riding a horse while drunk?

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 03:20:38 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- It might sound a little "Wild West," but where there are horses and alcohol in the same place, it isn't unheard of for someone to try mixing the two.If you've ever wondered what might happen -- or even heard a rumor about someone getting a DUI for riding horseback while drunk -- you may be curious about what the law actually entails.Colorado's driving under the influence law applies to people who are driving vehicles, and the law describes exactly what is and isn't considered a vehicle. Animals are not vehiclesA "vehicle," at least as far as the state law is concerned, must be capable of moving itself or being moved using wheels or endless tracks. This, of course, doesn't include horses and other animals that people ride. And since the law only applies to vehicles -- motorized or otherwise -- riding horseback while under the influence doesn't count. Are people from Colorado called Coloradans or Coloradoans? However, that doesn't mean you're off the hook if you over...

NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, N.J. (WSVN) — A retired flight attendant is embarking on a special mission to honor the lives lost on 9/11. Paul Veneto started his journey on Monday for his annual “Paulie’s Push” tribute walk. The commemorative journey follows different paths each year that symbolize the flight path each plane took before it crashed on 9/11. Veneto pushes a beverage cart with every walk he does. In 2021, the year the walk started, he walked to the 9/11 National Memorial from the Boston-Logan International Airport. In 2022, he walked from Washington Dulles International Airport to the Pentagon. This year, Venato will walk from Newark Liberty International Airport to northwestern Pennsylvania; this would symbolize the path of Flight 93 before it crashed. Each walk was completed on Sept. 11 in the years prior. Venato plans to do the same in 2023 as he walks 300 miles to the Flight 93 National Memorial.Venato’s journey has gained publ...

Russia lifts rates to 12 percent to boost ruble

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 03:20:38 GMT

The Central Bank of Russia ratcheted up its key interest rates by a hefty 3.5 percentage points to 12 percent on Tuesday as it moved to bolster a crumbling ruble. The panicked response, during an emergency meeting of the bank, came after the ruble weakened beyond a critical psychological level of 100 to the dollar on Monday, hitting 102.25 and a 16-month low. The combination of a weak currency and a diminishing current account surplus, which measures the difference between what a country imports and exports, are now contributing to inflation in the Russian economy. The deterioration is the result of both weaker commodity prices and Russian commodity exports being curtailed by sanctions. This comes despite Russian crude, known as Urals grade, trading above the internationally agreed price cap of $60 since mid July. The worsening inflation outlook is, however, likely to be met with swift and assertive action from the CBR. The central bank’s governor, ...
