NEW YORK (AP) — The pilots’ union for American Airlines has directed its members to refuse to fly to Israel, citing the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza. Union President Ed Sicher said in an email to members that the company’s pilots should not fly to Israel until they “can be reasonably assured of the region’s safety and security.”The email cites the most recent advisory from the U.S. State Department, which warns that the current situation in Israel “continues to be unpredictable,” and that mortar and rocket fire can take place any time without warning, putting aircraft in danger. “It is not prudent or appropriate to knowingly put our flight crews and passengers in harm’s way by maintaining flights into a war zone,” Sicher said. Israel formally declared war Sunday as it bombarded the Gaza strip with airstrikes in retaliation for a major surprise attack by Hamas. The declaration came a day after an unprecedented incursion by Hamas fight...

WASHINGTON (AP) — For Republicans, it's a question with no clear answer: Who becomes House speaker after Kevin McCarthy?Despite former President Donald Trump's endorsement of House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio on Friday, it's not at all certain that any of the GOP candidates will be able to round up enough votes — 218, if all lawmakers are present and voting — to ascend to one of the most powerful positions in government, second in line to the presidency. Jordan and a fellow longtime party stalwart and hard-liner, Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, have begun making their case though phone calls and texts to colleagues. With the House trying to pick a new leader as soon as next week, others are waiting in the wings, including Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern, who as chair of the Republican Study Committee leads the largest faction of Republicans in the chamber.McCarthy’s chaotic election as speaker in January took 15 punishing rounds and left him in a weakened position that...

Broncos report card: Ugly marks all around after Denver offense goes dark for 25 minutes, defense battered in 31-21 loss to Jets

Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 15:09:20 GMT

Offense — FWhat is it going to take for the Broncos offense to start a second half in rhythm? They’ve deferred the coin toss each of the first five games this year and those half-openers have finished in four three-and-outs and a missed field goal. Sean Payton’s offense netted minus-16 yards on four third-quarter possessions against the Jets. Even two drives that stalled inside the New York 5-yard line in the first half looked pretty by comparison.Denver ran it all over New York early on and then did nothing — for long stretches literally less than nothing — most of the rest of the afternoon. Wilson mounted a 75-yard touchdown drive to get the Broncos within 24-21 with 4:44 to go, but then fumbled about 20 yards short of field goal range in the final minute. Ouch. He got battered all day by a barrage of pressure and hits from the Jets’ dominating front four.Defense — DThe best thing to be said about Vance Joseph’s group on Sunday is that it didn’t allow a touchdown to the Jets in th...
