PARIS (AP) — Paychecks for the two French Open singles champions will return to the pre-pandemic amount of 2.3 million euros each — about $2.5 million — and the total prize money is rising to a tournament-record 49.6 million euros — about $54 million.The French tennis federation announced Friday what it will be offering at the clay-court Grand Slam event. Qualifying begins May 22; main-draw play starts May 28.The title winners in singles will get the same pay as in 2019, which was the high mark in Paris. During the coronavirus pandemic, those prizes dropped to 1.6 million euros in 2020 and 1.4 million euros in 2021, before going back up to 2.2 million euros a year ago. JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — U.S. Army Chief of Staff James McConville met with Indonesia’s top defense official on Friday to push for stronger security ties amid growing Chinese maritime activity in the Indo-Pacific region.McConville said he and Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto discussed ways to deepen cooperation, including enhanced military exercises between the countries.“We have many friends in the region, and we work closely together. As Mother’s Day 2023 approaches, a mother in Central Broward continues to wait for justice after her daughter was shot in a drive-by shooting nearly a year ago.Dru’Niyyia Griffin, 20, was critically injured on May 8, 2022, when another vehicle drove by and fired multiple shots at her parked car outside the house of someone they were visiting in unincorporated Central Broward near Fort Lauderdale. Griffin suffered several gunshot wounds and was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. She remains hospitalized as she has been paralyzed from the neck down as a result of the shooting and requires long-term care, including being fed from a feeding tube. A man who was also in the car was treated and released. Griffin’s mother hopes that this Mother’s Day will be the last one she spends without knowing who shot her child. (AP) — McDonald’s and a franchise holder are at fault after a hot Chicken McNugget from a Happy Meal fell on a little girl’s leg and caused second-degree burns, a jury in South Florida found in a case reminiscent of the famous hot coffee lawsuit of the 1990s.A second jury will determine how much McDonald’s USA and its franchise owner, Upchurch Foods, will pay the child and her mother, the South Florida SunSentinel reported.Thursday’s decision was split, with jurors finding the franchise holder liable for negligence and failure to warn customers about the risk of hot food, and McDonald’s USA liable for failing to provide instructions for safe handling of the food. Students at a South Florida school have been evacuated due to a threat. Hollywood Police arrived at South Broward High School, located at 1901 N. Federal Highway, Friday morning. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a bomb threat was called in to law enforcement . Hollywood Police do not believe the threat is credible. Students were evacuated from the school to the campus baseball field as a precaution. An investigation is underway.
