Bayern gets revenge on Freiburg ahead of Man City game

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:56:07 GMT

FREIBURG, Germany (AP) — Bayern Munich partly avenged its elimination from the German Cup by Freiburg midweek by winning their Bundesliga match 1-0 to keep the lead on Saturday.Bayern stayed two points clear of Borussia Dortmund ahead of a Champions League quarterfinal with Manchester City on Tuesday, but it was hardly a comfortable win.Just as in the cup quarterfinal loss to Freiburg on Tuesday — and in stark contrast to last week’s demolition of Dortmund in the “Klassiker” — Bayern struggled to finish off a determined and defensively well-organized Freiburg.Matthijs de Ligt’s speculative and powerful shot from distance, deflected into the top left corner, made the difference but Freiburg had chances to draw. Ritsu Doan hit the post for Freiburg just before the break and only another strong game from goalkeeper Yann Sommer, in place of the injured Manuel Neuer, kept Bayern’s lead intact. Woods extends Masters cut streak to record-tying 23 straight

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:56:07 GMT

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods can thank good friend Justin Thomas for helping to extend his streak of consecutive cuts made at the Masters to a record-tying 23 on Saturday.Woods was in danger of missing it for the first time as a professional when he resumed his second round in cold, driving rain and bogeyed his final two holes. That left Woods at 3 over and tied for 52nd, while the top 50 and ties make the cut.Moments after Woods signed his scorecard, though, Thomas missed a short par putt at the 17th, dropping him to 3-over and bringing everyone at that number inside the cut line. Thomas then bogeyed the 18th, ensuring Woods would play the rest the weekend and match Fred Couples and Gary Player for the longest streak of cuts made at the Masters.“I’ve always loved this golf course, and I love playing this event,” Woods said before Thomas finished. “I hope I get a chance to play this weekend — I’m sorry, I got a chance to play on the weekend. I wish I get a chance to play tw...

Column: How much longer will Tiger making cut be worth it?

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — For Tiger Woods, it’s come to this. He’s no longer a factor at the top of the leaderboard.Instead, the golfer who provided some of the game’s most electrifying moments can be found plodding along at the cut line, his primary goal simply to make it to the weekend. He backed into another bit of Masters history on a cold, rainy Saturday morning at Augusta National, making his 23rd consecutive cut to tie the tournament record shared by Gary Player and Fred Couples. Woods has never missed the Masters cut as a professional, a remarkable accomplishment in a career filled with them. But it feels so un-Tiger-like.He’s about winning green jackets, not surviving the cut.Woods closed his weather-delayed second round with back-to-back bogeys for a 1-over round of 73.
