BERLIN (AP) — More than 300 fencers, including nine medalists from the last Olympics in Tokyo, signed an open letter published Tuesday urging the sport’s governing body and the International Olympic Committee not to allow Russian fencers to compete while the war in Ukraine continues. The International Fencing Federation, known by its French acronym FIE, voted this month to allow fencers from Russia and its ally Belarus to return to international competitions as qualifying for next year’s Olympics in Paris ramps up.“The FIE is not fulfilling its duty of care for athletes, especially for Ukrainians. Your insufficient leadership in completely banning Russia and Belarus is being called out by athletes and civil society across the globe,” said the open letter signed by the fencers, organized by two advocacy groups, Athleten Deutschland and Global Athlete.“You have chosen Russian and Belarusian interests over the rights of athletes, notably Ukrainian athletes, and by doing so, ...Guerra de Rusia en Ucrania: última hora y noticias en vivo

(CNN) — A powerful winter storm system will strengthen over the Pacific, bringing damaging winds, rain, and heavy mountain snow to an already soaked California beginning Monday night.“Preceding storms have saturated soils which will result in trees coming down and the potential for more power outages,” National Weather Service San Francisco meteorologist Roger Grass told CNN.In an average winter, this type of atmospheric river storm would bring beneficial precipitation to the region. But given the unprecedented amount of rain and snow California has already received this winter, the storm will only exacerbate flooding issues, bring down weakened trees and add more snow to already record levels.Much of northern California is forecast to pick up 1-2 inches of rain, including the Bay Area, with isolated areas of higher rainfall.Though the totals may not seem very high, many locations are already experiencing their top 10 wettest Marches on record.“We still have ...Belgian cops arrest 8 people during anti-terror raids

Belgian police arrested a total of eight people Monday evening around the country, with at least 5 of the detainees suspected of preparing a terrorist attack in Belgium. The arrests were the result of two investigations, according to a statement from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, local media reported.“There are links between the two cases, but further investigation will need to reveal the extent to which the two cases were intertwined,” the statement reads. The searches of the first investigation, which saw Antwerp police arrest five people for questioning, took place around the country in Merksem, Borgerhout, Deurne, Molenbeek and Eupen. At least two people are suspected of preparing a terrorist attack on Belgian territory. In a separate investigation, three people were arrested across Zaventem and the Brussels municipalities of Molenbeek and Schaerbeek. All three are suspected of preparing a terrorist attack. The target of the attack is not known and no further ...Greece to hold national election on May 21

ATHENS — Greece will hold a parliamentary election on May 21, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Tuesday.“The country and its citizens need clear horizons,” Mitsotakis said during a Cabinet meeting. “The national elections will be held at the end of the four-year term, as I had committed from the start. They will take place on Sunday, May 21.”The conservative New Democracy government’s four-year term expires in July. While opinion polls show Mitsotakis’ New Democracy in the lead over the main opposition left-wing Syriza party, the gap has narrowed following a rail disaster on February 28 that killed 57 people, stirring public anger. The government’s lead has narrowed to 4 percent, according to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls. The May 21 vote will take place under a new proportional representation system, making it difficult for any party to gather a majority. Two rounds of voting are likely, as Mitsotakis has repeatedly said he will try to secure a parliamentary...Disney begins laying off 7,000 employees, CEO Bob Iger announces

(CNN) — Disney CEO Bob Iger on Monday said his company will begin laying off staff starting this week, the first of three rounds of expected cuts following his announcement in February that the company would axe 7,000 jobs. The cuts to Disney’s global workforce are part of a multibillion-dollar cost-cutting initiative aimed at streamlining the company’s operations in a period of media industry turmoil. In a memo to staff obtained by CNN, Iger said the layoffs would come in three waves. The first round will begin this week, and managers will soon start to notify affected employees. A second, larger round of layoffs will take place in April, Iger said, with several thousand staffers let go. A third round of layoffs will then occur “before the beginning of the summer” to reach the company’s planned goal of eliminating 7,000 jobs.“The difficult reality of many colleagues and friends leaving Disney is not something we take lightly,...Latest news
