Analysis: Grabbing play-in spots in the West will be tough

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 02:36:54 GMT

Let’s go ahead and put Denver and Sacramento into the Western Conference playoffs. It’s hard to imagine Memphis and Phoenix falling out of the mix, even with Ja Morant away from the Grizzlies and Kevin Durant still not able to make his home debut for the Suns because of ankle trouble. Put them on the bracket as well. And from there, it’s anyone’s guess. The West is an absolute mess, and the middle of the pack — the race for the last two guaranteed playoff spots and the four berths into the play-in tournament — is as muddled and murky as possible. “Hope,” Utah coach Will Hardy said, “is a good motivator.”True. There’s plenty of hope still out there, too.The West has, more often than not in recent years, been the power-broker side of the NBA. Not this year. The shinier records are at the top of the Eastern Conference, which is on pace to finish with three of the best four records this season — something that hasn’t happened since 2008-09.The West has become a logjam this year. Germany acts to shrink its massive parliament

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 02:36:54 GMT

BERLIN — Germany’s parliament is bulging at the seams — and the coalition government wants to put it on a diet. A new draft law seen by POLITICO would fix the number of lawmakers in the Bundestag at 630 (down from 736), as Pioneer first reported.“If we don’t change anything, the Bundestag will continue to grow,” Till Steffen, a Green Party lawmaker, told journalists Tuesday in Berlin. “We want to safeguard the parliament’s ability to act.”The German parliament has been growing for years due to the country’s complex voting system. Every German voter has two votes in the parliamentary elections. With the first vote, a candidate from the voter’s regional district is elected. In total there are 299 districts. Whoever receives a majority vote in a district enters the Bundestag. Another 299 lawmakers enter the Bundestag via a secondary vote for party lists in Germany’s 16 states.
