Alameda: Man seeks release in murder of trick-or-treater on Halloween 2007 OAKLAND — An Oakland man who was 16 when he was arrested in the murder of a 15-year-old trick-or-treater is seeking release from prison, arguing that his young age and rehabilitation in prison warrant an early termination of his sentence of 50 years to life behind bars.Quochuy “Tony” Tran, 32, was convicted in 2010 of murdering 15-year-old Ichinkhorloo “Iko” Bayarsaikhan at an Alameda park. The shooting occurred on Halloween 2007, while Tran and a group of friends were attempting to rob trick-or-treaters with a .22 caliber rifle. He was given 25 years to life for the murder conviction and additional 25 years for an enhancement of personally shooting Bayarsaikhan, court records show.In a legal motion filed Oct. 23, Tran’s deputy public defender cited not just Tran’s own apology letter and participation in dozens of rehabilitative programs, but the words of an appellate court justice and four correctional officers. An appellate court justice who also voted to uphold ...

Colorado trial looks at links between Trump, far-right groups By Nicholas Riccardi | Associated PressDENVER — Lawyers sparred Tuesday over former President Donald Trump’s relationship with the mob that attacked the Capitol, an important point in a Colorado lawsuit seeking to bar him from the 2024 ballot under the rarely used “insurrection” clause of the Constitution.Still to come: arguments over whether the events of Jan. 6, 2021, amounted to an insurrection under a provision put in the Constitution in 1868 to prevent former confederates from taking over the government. The plaintiffs presented testimony from an extremism expert who maintained that Trump had a clear relationship with far-right extremists and that they interpreted his pleas to protest the certification of President Joe Biden’s win as a call to arms.“A consistent theme is individuals reporting that they thought that Donald Trump had sent them there,” said sociology professor Peter Simi of Chapman University, a private college in Southern Califo...

San Jose Sharks get two players back, but that’s where the good news ends SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture has had a setback in his recovery from a lower-body injury, coach David Quinn said Tuesday.Couture skated at times while the Sharks were on their road trip last week, including on Friday, Quinn said, when the setback apparently took place. Also, defenseman Matt Benning will likely go on injured reserve, Quinn said, who added that winger Alexander Barabanov will miss four-to-six weeks with the broken finger he suffered on Oct. 24 against the Florida Panthers. Barabanov was in front of the net when he was accidentally hit by a shot from Mike Hoffman.Benning was scratched from last Thursday’s game with the Carolina Hurricanes but played Sunday against the Washington Capitals. The good news for the Sharks on Tuesday is that two other players are now available, as defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk was recalled from his AHL conditioning loan and forward/defenseman Jacob MacDonald was activated off IR.Okhotiuk and MacDonald did practice Tuesday as the...

Source: 49ers trade for Chase Young to reunite with Nick Bosa, spark pass rush SANTA CLARA – Defensive end Chase Young is coming to the 49ers to form what could be a formidable pass-rush tandem with Nick Bosa, a former Ohio State teammate. Bolstering a sagging defense, however, is the over-arching goal for an NFC contender on a three-game losing streak. The 49ers acquired Young from the Washington Commanders for a third-round draft pick, a team source confirmed less than an hour before the NFL’s trade deadline. Young must pass a physical for the deal to become official.Young’s career opened with a similar path as Bosa’s: Both were No. 2 overall picks (Bosa in 2019, Young in 2020), both won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, and both sustained anterior cruciate ligament injuries in their second seasons. Now Young and Bosa reunite to try leading the 49ers (5-3) out of the three-game losing streak they’ve taken into this week’s bye. Bosa has three sacks but a NFL-best 19 quarterback hits since signing the NFL’s richest cont...
